CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS REACHES A MILLION MINUTES

Computers West, (www.computerswest.org) sponsor of “Cell Phones for Soldiers”, began collecting old cell phones six and a half years ago. Started by member Bill Berry in 2007, the club hoped to collect a couple of hundred phones, but in reality, they just collected their 10,000th phone. The phones are broken down, and the parts are recycled. Each phone equates to a 100-minute phone calling card for our servicemen and women overseas, so that they can keep in touch back home. That’s a million minutes and growing! Not only do we help a great cause, but recycling helps save our environment by keeping phones out of our landfills. Steve and Linda Victor took over the quest of collecting phones in 2009. They credit the generosity of the Sun City West community with making this a successful program. “Cell Phones for Soldiers” (cellphonesforsoldiers.com) was started by Brittany and Robbie Bergquist in 2004 when they heard of a soldier having a high phone bill from calling home. What started with raiding their piggy banks has grown into a nationwide cause. They also have an iphone buy program on the website. Our quest continues. Continue donating your old phones and pass the word! It’s one way we can say “Thank You!” to the men and women who continue to give so much to our country. Look for the “Cell Phones for Soldiers” boxes in the Computers West office at Palm Ridge, as well as, PORA, the R. H. Johnson Library, the Posse, the Fire District Administration Office, Church on the Green, the McDonald’s on Grand, & Bell & 99th, Ninos at Grand & Del Web, Northwest Physical Therapy in Surprise, and Credit Union West branches.
