Duties as a Monitor

by Ruth West, Monitor Chairperson

This is a brief outline of your duties as a Monitor. When you take the Monitor Training Class you will learn in more detail what daily tasks are involved.
  1. You arrive at 8:00 a.m. and prepare the club for use. Review the Monitors’ Manual and refer to the Daily Task Sheets for Monitors.
  2. Monitors who will relieve you at noon need to be called to remind them. After-noon Monitors will call those scheduled for the following morning.
  3. You will assist residents who want to become members or renew memberships.
  4. Members will ask for help finding classes being offered. Check the various note-books on the shelf and be ready to answer questions.
  5. You are not required to assist members with computer use. Refer them to the “Hands-On-Help” group for technical matters.
  6. Calendars for sessions in Rooms B and C and the Palo Verde Room are posted on the doors. Callers will ask for information about these meetings and classes.
  7. Remind all members that they must be wearing a Computers West badge.
  8. Afternoon Monitors arrive at noon and shut down Room A at 4:00 p.m. The door automatically locks at 4:00 when you leave.

How To Be A V.I.P. at Computers West: Be A Monitor!

If you are looking for a way to be active, informed and helpful, here is your chance. The following will give you a brief summary of the duties of a Monitor. When you take the Monitor Training Class you will learn in more detail what the daily tasks involve.

When you arrive at 8:00 a.m., prepare the club for use. If the door is locked, contact the Rec. Center employee in the office across from the Stained Glass Club who will open the door for you. Turn on the two light switches under the small bulletin board. Take time to review the Monitors’ Manual on the desk and refer to the Daily Task Sheets for Monitors in this manual. The Monitors who will relieve you at noon need to be called to remind them. Check the Monitors computer for the online Monitors calendar for the names in the schedule. Phone numbers are available on the Membership computer or the printed roster on the desk. Afternoon Monitors will call those scheduled for the following morning.

You will assist residents who want to become members or renew membership. Two types of envelopes are in the desk drawer; green for new members, gold to renew membership. Members insert a check for the amount and return it to you. The Monitor puts this in the Treasurer’s box under the desk. Any changes in current members information requires them to fill out the white card for this same box.

Monitors are not required to assist members on computers or in technical matters. Refer PC users to the Hands-On Help group. Refer Mac users to the Mac Help sessions, as well as to the Help page of the MacsWest website.

It is good to familiarize yourself with the PCUG class offerings in the notebooks. The envelopes for these classes are not to leave the office. Members fill in all the information, enclose a check for the class fee and give this to the Monitor. These are put in the box under the desk marked “Class Fees”.

MacsWest members signup for classes online, and bring a check to the first class. Refer MacsWest members to their website at http://www.macswest.org for course information and signup procedures.

At 4:00 p.m. you will shut down Room A. If there are classes in Rooms B or C, advise the instructors that you are leaving and the door will be locked. Turn off the two light switches next to the small bulletin board. It is no longer necessary to turn off the power switch. The door automatically locks at 4:00 p.m. Be sure that the door is locked when you leave.

Being a Monitor is interesting and rewarding. You meet many nice people and have a pleasant experience giving back to the club you enjoy. The training classes are held on the fourth Monday of each month and we encourage you to come for this.  Classroom space is limited therefore it is necessary to signup for this training.  A signup sheet is on the wall opposite the Monitor's desk in Room A.  You will feel confident serving as a Monitor after this training.
